Varnishing

Varnishing is a common foreign trade term in the printing and packaging industry. It refers to applying a layer of transparent coating (varnish) on the surface of printed materials, which after drying forms a thin and uniform glossy or matte protective film. Its main functions include: enhancing product gloss and texture, improving abrasion resistance and water resistance, and protecting printed patterns from scratches. In foreign trade, varnishing is often used as a post-press process for products such as packaging boxes, labels, and manuals. Customers may specify effects like Gloss, Matte, or Spot UV. Precautions: It is necessary to clarify the type of varnish (water-based, oil-based, UV), coating thickness, environmental standards (such as ROHS, REACH), and whether it affects subsequent bonding or lamination. The difference from lamination is that varnishing is a liquid coating, which is lower in cost and recyclable, but offers slightly weaker protection; lamination involves attaching a plastic film, which is more abrasion-resistant but not easily degradable. Compared with oil varnishing, varnishing usually refers to a thicker, glossier coating. In foreign trade contracts, the process parameters and acceptance standards for varnishing should be specified to avoid claims arising from non-conforming gloss or abrasion resistance.
