Open Crate

Open Crate (also called skeleton crate or slatted crate) is an open packaging container made of wooden boards nailed with gaps between them. Its characteristic is that the crate body has gaps and is not sealed. It is mainly used for loading large and medium-sized mechanical equipment, parts, pipes, profiles, etc., that are not afraid of moisture, do not need dust protection, but require a certain degree of protection. Usage scenarios include: low-cost packaging for heavy or irregular cargo in sea and land transport; cargo that needs ventilation or condensation avoidance (such as certain metal products and wood products). Precautions: Open crates are not waterproof, moisture-proof, or dust-proof, and are not suitable for precision instruments, goods prone to rust, or goods that deteriorate from moisture. If goods are exported to countries requiring fumigation treatment (such as the United States and the European Union), wooden open crates must undergo ISPM 15 standard heat treatment or fumigation and bear the IPPC mark. Differences from other terms: Compared with a Closed Crate, an open crate uses less material, is lighter, and costs less, but has a lower level of protection; compared with a Pallet, an open crate provides higher stacking strength and side protection; compared with a Carton, an open crate has stronger load-bearing and impact resistance. In foreign trade documents, the packaging method should be accurately described to avoid customs inspection or cargo damage disputes caused by inconsistent packaging.
