Pipeline Transport

Pipeline transport refers to a mode of transportation that uses pipelines as the transport tool to continuously convey fluid or semi-fluid cargo such as oil, natural gas, chemical products, water, and even coal (in slurry form) from the place of origin to the destination. In foreign trade, pipeline transport is mainly applicable to cross-border transactions of energy and bulk liquid chemicals, such as oil and gas pipeline projects between China and Russia or Central Asian countries. Its use scenarios include stable delivery under long-term supply contracts, usually combined with trade terms such as FOB and CIF, but the delivery point may be at the pipeline inlet or outlet. Notes: Pipeline transport is characterized by large fixed investment and poor flexibility, so contracts must clearly specify transport volume, quality specifications, measurement methods, maintenance responsibilities, and force majeure clauses; compared with sea and rail transport, pipeline transport is less affected by weather and has lower losses, but it is only suitable for specific goods and fixed routes, and requires support from intergovernmental agreements. Foreign trade practitioners should pay attention to the qualifications of pipeline operators, the cross-border legal framework, and tariff arrangements.
