House B/L

House B/L (House Bill of Lading) refers to a bill of lading issued by a freight forwarder or a non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC), rather than by the actual carrier (shipping line). In international trade, when the cargo owner entrusts a freight forwarder to arrange transportation, the forwarder usually issues a House B/L to the cargo owner in its own name, while the shipping line issues a Master B/L to the forwarder. Scenarios for using House B/L include: LCL cargo, the forwarder acting as a contracting carrier, and situations requiring control over the title to goods or flexible services. Precautions: A House B/L is not an absolute guarantee of a document of title; its legal effect depends on the forwarder's qualifications. When taking delivery, the consignee must use the House B/L to exchange for the Master B/L or a delivery order at the forwarder's office. The difference from a Master B/L is: the Master B/L is issued by the shipping line and is a true document of title; the House B/L only represents the transport contract between the forwarder and the cargo owner, and whether banks accept it depends on the L/C terms.
