Australia Group

The Australia Group is an informal international export control mechanism established in 1985 to prevent the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons by coordinating national export control policies. Its members include over 40 countries such as Australia, the United States, and EU member states. It is not a formal international treaty but operates through voluntary implementation of unified export control lists and guidelines by member countries. In foreign trade practice, if export items involve sensitive chemicals, biological agents, related equipment, and technology, exporters must check whether they fall under Australia Group control and apply for corresponding export licenses. Note: The Group's control lists are updated regularly, and companies should follow the latest version; violations may lead to severe sanctions. Compared with other export control mechanisms such as the Wassenaar Arrangement and the Missile Technology Control Regime, the Australia Group focuses on the chemical and biological weapons field and has no secretariat, with decisions made by consensus. Foreign trade practitioners should incorporate it into their compliance review process to avoid legal risks from overlooking controls.
