FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)

FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) is a systematic preventive quality tool used to identify potential failure modes, assess their risks, and develop improvement measures in product design, manufacturing, or service processes. In foreign trade, FMEA is commonly used in supplier quality management, new product introduction, pre-production order reviews, and similar scenarios. For example, buyers may require suppliers to conduct FMEA on critical components to reduce defect rates after mass production. When using FMEA, note that it emphasizes proactive prevention rather than reactive correction, requires cross-functional team participation, and must be updated dynamically. Unlike 'QC inspection' or 'SPC', FMEA focuses on qualitative/quantitative assessment of potential risks (e.g., RPN values) rather than real-time monitoring or post-hoc screening. The difference from an '8D report' is that FMEA is a proactive analysis tool, while 8D is used to resolve problems that have already occurred. Foreign trade professionals should understand that an FMEA report can serve as part of supplier capability assessment or contract quality clauses.
