Hi-Pot Tester

A Hi-Pot Tester (High Potential Tester) is a specialized instrument used to test the dielectric strength of electrical equipment by applying a high voltage (usually AC or DC) to verify whether the product experiences breakdown or excessive leakage current under abnormal voltage conditions. In foreign trade, this term is commonly found in the export quality inspection of electronic appliances, wires and cables, power adapters, and other products. It is a key testing device for compliance with safety standards such as IEC, UL, and CE. Usage scenarios include: routine hi-pot testing on factory production lines, safety item testing during third-party inspections, and spot checks by customs or market regulatory authorities in importing countries. Precautions: Different countries have different regulations on test voltage, duration, and leakage current thresholds (e.g., UL requires 1000V + 2 times rated voltage, while IEC may differ). The target market standards must be confirmed before export. Additionally, the equipment itself must be calibrated regularly and a calibration certificate issued; otherwise, test results may not be recognized. The difference from an insulation resistance tester is that a hi-pot tester applies high voltage and detects breakdown, while an insulation resistance tester applies low-voltage DC and measures resistance value. The two cannot be substituted for each other.
