Alteration Charge

Alteration Charge is an additional fee in ocean shipping incurred when the consignee requests a change to the originally designated port of discharge. This typically occurs when the cargo has been loaded but has not yet arrived at the original port of discharge, and the cargo owner applies for a change due to trade needs or logistics adjustments. The shipping company must rearrange the route, shipping space, and documentation, and therefore charges this fee. Usage scenarios include: buyer changes, resale of goods, tax avoidance, or political factors. Precautions: The change must be requested within the time allowed by the shipping company and may be subject to restrictions imposed by the route, shipping space, and destination port policies; the fee is usually borne by the applicant and must be paid in full before cargo pickup. It is similar to "port change fee," but Alteration Charge emphasizes the act of "alteration" itself, while "port change fee" may include more operational costs. It differs from "demurrage" and "amendment fee," which respectively apply to container overtime and document modification and do not involve a change of port of discharge. Foreign trade practitioners should confirm the fee standards and feasibility with the shipping company in advance to avoid additional costs.
