Payment Gap

Order Payment Gap refers to the difference between the amount payable by the buyer and the amount actually received by the seller in the execution of a foreign trade order, usually caused by payment terms (such as advance payment, balance payment, letter of credit, documentary collection). Common scenario: the contract stipulates 30% advance payment and 70% payment against copy of bill of lading; if the buyer only pays the advance payment, then the 70% is the payment gap. This term is used to assess foreign exchange collection risk, cash flow pressure, and credit management. Notes: it is necessary to clarify whether the gap is within the credit period and whether bank guarantees are involved; unlike 'accounts receivable', payment gap emphasizes the unpaid portion under a specific order rather than the overall aging. The difference from 'payment default' is that the gap may be a contractually permitted staged unpaid amount and does not necessarily constitute a breach. Practitioners should monitor the gap ratio to avoid affecting stock preparation or document presentation.
