Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a formal document issued by a manufacturer or a third-party testing institution, detailing the test results of a specific batch of product, including chemical composition, physical properties, purity, impurity content, etc. In foreign trade, it is commonly used in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics, and serves as an important basis for proving that product quality meets contract or standard requirements. Usage scenarios include: customs clearance in the importing country, customer acceptance, quality dispute resolution, etc. Precautions: The COA must correspond to a specific batch and cannot be used generically; test items should be based on the standards stipulated in the contract (such as ISO, ASTM, pharmacopoeia, etc.); the issuing institution must be qualified, and it is best if the document is signed and stamped. Difference from 'Certificate of Quality': A COA focuses on specific test data, while a Certificate of Quality makes a more general declaration that the product is qualified; Difference from 'Inspection Report': A COA is usually issued by the manufacturer, while an inspection report is often issued by a third-party inspection agency. Foreign trade practitioners should ensure that the COA content is consistent with the contract and letter of credit requirements to avoid refusal of payment or return of goods due to data discrepancies.
