Mode of Transport

Mode of Transport refers to the means by which goods are carried from the place of origin to the destination in international trade. It directly affects delivery time, cost, risk allocation, and the choice of trade terms. Common modes include sea freight, air freight, land transport (road/rail), multimodal transport, and pipeline transport. In terms of application, sea freight is suitable for large-volume, low-value goods; air freight is suitable for high-value, urgent goods; land transport is mostly used for neighboring countries; multimodal transport integrates multiple modes to improve efficiency. Precautions: It is necessary to clarify the point of risk transfer in conjunction with Incoterms (e.g., FOB and CIF apply only to sea freight, while FCA, CPT, and CIP apply to any mode); the mode of transport affects insurance, documents (such as ocean bills of lading and air waybills), and customs clearance procedures. Difference from other terms: Mode of transport focuses on the physical means of carriage, while delivery terms (such as DAP and DDP) focus on the allocation of responsibilities and costs; mode of transport is also different from means of conveyance (such as ships and aircraft), as the former is an abstract category and the latter is a specific carrier. Foreign trade practitioners need to make a comprehensive choice based on cargo characteristics, time requirements, cost, and customer requirements.
