Multi-purpose Vessel

A Multi-purpose Vessel (MPV) refers to a ship capable of carrying various types of cargo (such as containers, bulk cargo, breakbulk, heavy-lift equipment, etc.), typically equipped with cranes, adjustable hatch covers, and strengthened decks. In foreign trade transportation, MPVs are commonly used to carry project cargo, machinery and equipment, steel, and other goods not suitable for standard container ships or bulk carriers, especially for routes with limited port facilities or requiring self-loading and self-discharging. Use cases include: consolidated stowage of bulk and breakbulk cargo, transportation of over-length and over-weight cargo, and outports not covered by liner services. Notes: MPV freight rates are usually higher than container ships but lower than specialized heavy-lift vessels; it is necessary to confirm whether the ship's crane capacity, hatch dimensions, and deck strength meet cargo requirements; compared with General Cargo Ships, MPVs emphasize multi-purpose adaptability, and compared with container ships, MPVs have looser restrictions on cargo packaging and dimensions. Foreign trade practitioners should specify in the contract the loading and discharging terms (such as FIOST), stowage factor, and lashing and securing responsibilities to avoid demurrage or cargo damage caused by vessel unsuitability.
