Packing List

Packing List is one of the core documents issued by the seller in foreign trade transactions, detailing the packaging method, quantity, gross weight, net weight, volume, and shipping marks of each shipment. It is mainly used for buyer customs clearance, carrier stowage, warehouse verification, and insurance claims. Usage scenarios include: letter of credit negotiation, customs declaration and inspection, transport handover, and cargo pickup at the destination port. Precautions: The contents of the packing list must be strictly consistent with other documents such as the invoice and bill of lading, especially the weight and volume data; if the letter of credit requires a 'detailed packing list,' each item must be listed individually; for dangerous goods or special cargo, the packing grade and UN number must also be indicated. The difference from a commercial invoice is that the invoice focuses on the value of goods and transaction amount and serves as the basis for settlement and taxation, while the packing list focuses on the physical condition of the goods and serves as the basis for logistics and warehousing. The difference from a weight list is that a packing list may include weight information, but a weight list focuses only on weight details. Therefore, foreign trade practitioners should ensure that the packing list is accurate and clear to avoid customs clearance delays or refusal of payment due to inconsistent data.
