Proponents argue that biofuels offer three major environmental and economic benefits. First, biofuels are considered carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide emitted during combustion is roughly equivalent to the amount absorbed by the plants during their growth, thus not contributing to net atmospheric CO2 increases. Second, biofuels reduce dependence on foreign oil, enhancing national energy security by providing a domestically produced fuel source. Third, the production of biofuels stimulates rural economies by creating jobs in farming and processing industries, thereby supporting agricultural communities. Given these advantages, many governments have implemented policies to subsidize biofuel production and mandate their use in transportation fuels.

While plants absorb CO2 during growth, the entire lifecycle of biofuel production—including farming machinery, fertilizer production, and transportation—relies heavily on fossil fuels, releasing significant amounts of CO2. When these factors are considered, biofuels may emit nearly as much carbon as conventional gasoline, if not more. Second, the assertion that biofuels enhance energy security is questionable. In many countries, the demand for biofuel crops exceeds domestic production, leading to imports of feedstock such as palm oil or sugarcane, thus merely shifting dependence from oil-exporting nations to food-exporting nations. Third, the economic benefits to rural areas are often overstated. Biofuel subsidies often favor large agribusinesses rather than small farmers, and the diversion of crops like corn to fuel can drive up food prices, harming both local consumers and global food security. Consequently, the purported advantages of biofuels are not as clear-cut as the reading suggests.
