The use of biofuels, such as ethanol derived from corn, has been widely promoted as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Proponents argue that biofuels offer significant environmental and economic benefits. First, biofuels are considered carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide released during combustion is roughly equivalent to the amount absorbed by the crops during growth. This cycle theoretically helps mitigate climate change by not adding net CO2 to the atmosphere. Second, the production of biofuels stimulates rural economies by creating jobs in farming, processing, and distribution. This can revitalize agricultural communities and reduce dependence on imported oil. Third, biofuels are renewable and can be produced domestically, enhancing energy security by reducing reliance on politically unstable oil-exporting regions. For these reasons, many governments have mandated blending biofuels with gasoline, viewing them as a key component of future energy policy.
