The use of biofuels, such as ethanol derived from corn, has been widely promoted as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Proponents argue that biofuels offer significant environmental, economic, and energy security benefits. First, biofuels are considered carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide emitted during combustion is roughly equal to the amount absorbed by the plants during growth. This cycle theoretically reduces net greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels, which release ancient carbon stored over millions of years. Second, the biofuel industry stimulates rural economies by creating new markets for agricultural products. Farmers can diversify their income by growing energy crops, and the construction and operation of biofuel processing plants generate jobs in rural areas, where employment opportunities are often limited. Third, biofuels enhance national energy security by reducing dependence on imported oil. Countries with abundant agricultural land can produce a significant portion of their fuel domestically, insulating them from global oil price volatility and geopolitical disruptions. For these reasons, many governments have implemented mandates and subsidies to encourage biofuel production, viewing it as a cornerstone of future energy policy.

The professor challenges each of the reading's claims. First, the carbon-neutrality argument is flawed. While plants absorb CO2 during growth, the production of biofuels involves substantial emissions from farming equipment, fertilizer manufacturing, and transportation. Moreover, land-use changes, such as converting forests or grasslands to cropland, release large amounts of stored carbon. When these indirect emissions are accounted for, biofuels may actually produce more greenhouse gases than conventional fuels. Second, the economic benefits to rural communities are overstated. The biofuel industry is heavily dependent on government subsidies; without them, many plants would be unprofitable. Furthermore, the push for energy crops can drive up food prices, hurting local consumers and small farmers who cannot compete with large agribusinesses. In many cases, the jobs created are seasonal and low-skilled, offering little long-term economic stability. Third, energy security is not necessarily improved. Biofuel production requires significant water and chemical inputs, and the infrastructure for distribution is often incompatible with existing fuel systems. Additionally, relying on domestic biofuels can create vulnerability to crop failures due to drought or pests, which could disrupt supply just as much as foreign oil. Thus, the supposed advantages of biofuels are largely illusory.
