The decline of the honeybee population has been widely reported, but a less-publicized yet equally alarming trend is the decline of native bee species. While honeybees are managed by beekeepers and can be artificially sustained, native bees are essential for pollination of many wild plants and crops. Several factors are responsible for this decline, and three stand out as primary drivers. First, habitat loss due to urban development and intensive agriculture removes the flowering plants and nesting sites that native bees depend on. Second, the widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides, even at sublethal doses, impairs native bees' foraging behavior and navigation, reducing their ability to collect food and reproduce. Third, climate change alters the timing of flower blooming and bee emergence, leading to a mismatch that reduces food availability for bees during critical periods of their life cycle.

The professor argues that the reading's claims about native bee decline are oversimplified and not fully supported by recent research. Regarding habitat loss, while it is a real threat, the reading ignores the success of urban green spaces and pollinator-friendly corridors, which have been shown to support diverse native bee communities. In fact, some studies find that cities can host more native bee species than surrounding agricultural lands. As for pesticides, the lecture points out that neonicotinoid concentrations in the environment are typically far below the levels that cause the behavioral impairments described in the reading. Moreover, many native bee species have shown resilience to these chemicals, and the main driver of decline in agricultural areas is the loss of floral diversity, not pesticide toxicity. Finally, the climate change argument is contradicted by evidence that many native bee species are shifting their ranges and phenology in tandem with plants. For example, some bees have evolved to emerge earlier in response to warmer springs, and plant-pollinator networks are proving more flexible than previously thought.
