📖 읽기 지문

The introduction of the electric car has been hailed as a major step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, a closer examination reveals that electric vehicles (EVs) may not be as environmentally friendly or practical as they seem. First, the production of EV batteries requires lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which are mined through environmentally destructive processes. These mining operations consume vast amounts of water and energy, and they generate toxic waste that can contaminate local ecosystems. Second, the electricity used to charge EVs often comes from coal or natural gas power plants. In many regions, the grid is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels, meaning that an EV charged from such a grid indirectly emits significant carbon dioxide. Third, the limited range of EVs and the long time required to recharge them pose serious practical challenges. Unlike gasoline cars, which can be refueled in minutes, EVs often need hours to charge, and charging stations are still sparse in many areas. This makes EVs inconvenient for long-distance travel and for people who lack access to home charging.

The lecture challenges the reading's claims about electric vehicles, arguing that the drawbacks presented are either exaggerated or being rapidly overcome. First, while the reading criticizes battery production, it ignores that battery technology is evolving quickly. Many manufacturers are now using recycled materials and developing solid-state batteries that require less rare earth elements. Moreover, the environmental cost of battery production is offset by the much lower emissions over the vehicle's lifetime, as numerous life-cycle analyses have shown. Second, the concern about electricity generation from fossil fuels is becoming less relevant because the share of renewable energy in the grid is increasing worldwide. For instance, many countries are investing heavily in solar and wind power, and even with current grids, EVs produce fewer emissions than conventional cars. Third, the issue of range and charging time is being addressed through technological advances. New fast-charging stations can provide up to 80% charge in about 20 minutes, and battery range has extended significantly, with many new models exceeding 300 miles. Additionally, the network of charging stations is expanding rapidly, and solutions like battery swapping are being piloted in several countries. Thus, the reading's objections are based on outdated information and overlook the ongoing improvements in EV technology.
