Today we're going to talk about a fascinating behavior in the animal kingdom called 'tool use.' Now, tool use isn't just about using an object to get food—it can also serve other important functions, like defense or communication. My main point is that animals use tools in ways that go beyond simple foraging, and these uses are often crucial for their survival. Let me give you two examples. First, the veined octopus. This clever creature lives on the seafloor and collects coconut shells that have been discarded by humans. It carries these shells with it and, when threatened by predators, it hides inside the shells, clamping them shut. This provides a portable shelter, which is a clear case of tool use for protection. Second, consider the male bowerbird. He builds an elaborate structure, called a bower, using twigs and grasses. Then he decorates it with bright blue objects—berries, flowers, even plastic items if available. He uses these tools to attract a female mate. The more attractive the bower, the more likely he is to reproduce. So, as you can see, tool use in animals is not only about getting food but also about protection and reproduction.
