Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating behavior in the animal kingdom called 'cooperative hunting.' This is when animals work together in groups to catch prey that would be too difficult or dangerous to catch alone. The main point I want to emphasize is that cooperative hunting not only increases the chances of a successful kill but also allows animals to target larger and more nutritious prey than they could on their own. Let me give you two examples. First, consider lions. Female lions in a pride often hunt together in coordinated groups. They use a strategy where some lions circle around and drive the prey toward the others waiting in ambush. This teamwork enables them to take down large animals like wildebeests, which are much bigger than a single lion could handle. Second, think about orcas, or killer whales. They cooperate by herding schools of fish into tight balls near the surface, then taking turns swimming through the ball to feed. This method is highly efficient and allows them to capture many fish at once, far more than any individual orca could catch alone. So, in both cases, cooperation is key to accessing resources that would otherwise be out of reach.
