Today we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'behavioral thermoregulation.' This is when animals actively adjust their behavior to maintain a stable body temperature, rather than relying solely on physiological mechanisms. One clear example is the desert lizard. In the scorching heat of the day, when ground temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius, the lizard will climb onto a rock or a bush to get above the hot surface. By doing this, it raises itself into cooler air currents, which helps it avoid overheating. Another example is the honeybee. On very hot days, worker bees will leave the hive and cluster at the entrance, fanning their wings rapidly. This creates a flow of air that draws hot, humid air out of the hive and brings in cooler, drier air from outside. By doing this, they effectively cool the hive and protect the developing larvae inside. So, both examples show how animals use simple but effective movements and actions to manage their heat balance.
