Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating phenomenon in animal behavior called 'biological mimicry.' Specifically, I want to focus on how some animals use mimicry not just to hide from predators, but to actively attract prey. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the anglerfish. It lives in the deep, dark ocean where food is scarce. The anglerfish has a special dorsal fin that extends over its mouth like a fishing rod, with a glowing tip. This light attracts smaller fish and shrimp, which swim right toward it. When they get close enough, the anglerfish snaps them up. Second, think about the orchid mantis. This insect resembles a pink orchid flower. It sits motionless on a plant, and because it looks exactly like a flower, butterflies and bees land on it, thinking it's a real blossom. Then, the mantis grabs them with its powerful front legs. So, in both cases, the animals use mimicry to lure their food.
