Today we're going to talk about a fascinating behavior in the animal kingdom: cooperative hunting. While many animals hunt alone, some species have evolved to hunt in groups, which can significantly increase their chances of capturing prey. This strategy is especially common when the prey is large or fast, making it difficult for a single predator to succeed. Let me give you two examples. First, consider lions. Female lions in a pride often work together to hunt zebras or wildebeests. They fan out in a formation, with some lions driving the prey toward others who are hiding in ambush. This coordination allows them to take down animals much larger than themselves. Second, look at orcas, or killer whales. In the waters off Antarctica, orcas hunt seals that rest on ice floes. They work as a team to create waves that wash the seal off the ice, making it vulnerable. The pod then takes turns to catch the seal. In both cases, the key is that each individual plays a specific role, and the combined effort leads to a successful hunt that no single animal could achieve alone.
