Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior known as 'tool use.' Now, while many people think tool use is unique to humans, several animal species have developed remarkable abilities to use objects from their environment to solve problems. One classic example is the sea otter. Sea otters often feed on shellfish like clams and crabs, which have hard shells. To crack them open, the otter will float on its back, place a stone on its chest, and then smash the shellfish against the stone until it breaks. This behavior, which they learn from their mothers, allows them to access a food source that would otherwise be difficult to eat. Another great example is the woodpecker finch from the Galápagos Islands. This bird uses a cactus spine or a small twig to probe into tree bark and extract insects. It will even modify the tool, breaking off thorns or shortening the twig, to make it more effective. The finch's clever use of tools helps it find food where other birds cannot reach. So, as you can see, tool use is not just a human trait—it's a survival strategy that has evolved independently in different species to overcome environmental challenges.
