Today we're going to talk about how animals use camouflage not just to hide from predators, but also to attract prey or mates. One key concept is 'aggressive mimicry,' where an animal uses its appearance to lure its own prey. For example, the anglerfish. It lives in the deep, dark ocean where it's nearly invisible. It has a glowing lure that dangles in front of its mouth. Smaller fish are attracted to the light, thinking it's a tasty snack, and as they approach, the anglerfish snaps them up. Another example is the orchid mantis. This insect resembles a beautiful orchid flower. It sits on a plant, and its petal-like legs and body attract pollinators like bees. When a bee lands on it expecting nectar, the mantis quickly grabs it and eats it. So, in both cases, the animals use their appearance to deceive others for their benefit, which is a fascinating adaptation.
