Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in biology called 'mimicry.' Mimicry is when one species evolves to look or behave like another species, often to gain a survival advantage. There are two main types of mimicry: Batesian and Müllerian. Let me explain each with an example. First, Batesian mimicry occurs when a harmless species imitates a dangerous or poisonous one to avoid predators. For instance, the scarlet king snake, which is harmless, has evolved to look very similar to the venomous coral snake. Predators that have learned to avoid the coral snake also avoid the king snake, giving it protection. Second, Müllerian mimicry happens when two or more harmful species evolve to look alike, so predators learn to avoid them more quickly. A classic example is the monarch and viceroy butterflies. Both are toxic to birds, and because they share similar warning colors, birds that taste one will avoid both. This shared appearance benefits both species by reinforcing the predator's memory. So, the professor's main point is that mimicry is a powerful evolutionary strategy that can occur in different forms, each enhancing survival in its own way.
