Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in biology called 'mimicry.' Mimicry occurs when one species evolves to resemble another species, often to gain a survival advantage. There are two main types: defensive mimicry, where an animal looks like a dangerous or unpalatable species to avoid predators, and aggressive mimicry, where a predator mimics a harmless species to lure prey. Let me give you two examples. First, the viceroy butterfly. It closely resembles the monarch butterfly, which is toxic to birds because of the milkweed it eats. Birds learn to avoid monarchs, and they also avoid viceroys, giving the viceroy protection. Second, the anglerfish. It has a fleshy, worm-like appendage that dangles in front of its mouth. Smaller fish, thinking it's a tasty worm, swim closer, and the anglerfish snaps them up. So, in both cases, mimicry helps the species survive—either by avoiding being eaten or by making it easier to catch food.
