Today we're going to talk about a fascinating phenomenon in animal behavior known as 'mimicry for protection.' Now, this isn't just about looking like another animal—it's about using deception to increase survival. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the harmless milk snake. It has evolved to display the same red, yellow, and black banding pattern as the highly venomous coral snake. Predators that have learned to avoid the coral snake also avoid the milk snake, even though it's completely harmless. This works because the predator generalizes the warning signal to any similar pattern. Second, think about the orchid mantis. This insect has a body that mimics a pink orchid flower. It doesn't just hide from predators—it actually attracts prey. Bees and butterflies, seeking nectar, land directly on the mantis, which then captures them. So, in both cases, mimicry provides a survival advantage, but the strategy differs: one is about avoiding being eaten, and the other is about ambushing food.
