Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating behavior in animals called 'tool use.' Now, tool use isn't just about using an object to get food; it can also serve social or defensive purposes. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the sea otter. Sea otters float on their backs and use rocks to crack open hard-shelled clams. They place the rock on their chest and smash the clam against it. This is a well-known example of tool use for feeding. But here's the twist: sea otters also use tools for social reasons. When a male otter wants to attract a mate, he might present a particularly nice rock to a female. This rock isn't useful for eating—it's a gift, a sign of his skill and suitability as a partner. So, tool use can be about building relationships, not just survival. Second, think about the octopus. Some octopuses, like the veined octopus, collect coconut shells. They carry these shells around and then assemble them into a shelter when they feel threatened or need to hide. This isn't for getting food; it's for protection. They use the shells as a portable armor. So, as you can see, tool use in animals goes beyond simple food acquisition—it can be for social bonding or defense.
