Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'behavioral thermoregulation.' This refers to the strategies animals use to control their body temperature through their actions, rather than through physiological changes like sweating or shivering. The main point is that animals can actively choose behaviors to maintain an optimal body temperature for survival. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the desert lizard. In the scorching heat of the day, it will often climb onto a rock that is elevated and exposed to the sun. By doing so, it absorbs heat to warm up its body, which speeds up its metabolism and allows it to digest food more efficiently. However, when the temperature gets too hot, the lizard will move into the shade under a bush or into a burrow to cool down, preventing overheating. Second, think about honeybees. In a hive, when the temperature rises too high, worker bees will collect water and spread it over the hive's surface, then fan their wings to create airflow. This evaporative cooling lowers the hive's temperature. Conversely, on cold days, bees cluster together tightly and shiver their flight muscles to generate heat, keeping the hive warm. These examples clearly show how behavioral choices help animals regulate their body temperature.
