Today we're going to discuss a concept in animal behavior called 'mimicry.' Mimicry occurs when one species evolves to resemble another species, often to gain a survival advantage. There are two main types of mimicry: Batesian and Müllerian. In Batesian mimicry, a harmless species mimics a dangerous or unpalatable one to avoid predators. For example, the scarlet king snake, which is harmless, has evolved to look very similar to the venomous coral snake. Predators that have learned to avoid the coral snake also avoid the king snake. In Müllerian mimicry, two or more dangerous species evolve to look alike, which reinforces the warning signal for predators. For instance, several species of poisonous frogs in the Amazon share similar bright color patterns. Because predators learn to avoid these colors after one encounter, all the frog species benefit from the shared appearance, reducing the chance of any individual being attacked.
