Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior known as 'behavioral thermoregulation.' This is when animals actively adjust their behavior to control their body temperature, rather than relying solely on physiological mechanisms like sweating or shivering. The main point is that behavioral strategies can be just as important as physical ones for surviving in extreme environments. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the desert iguana. In the scorching heat of the Mojave Desert, when ground temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius, this lizard will climb onto rocks or bushes to get above the hot surface. By elevating itself, it avoids absorbing heat from the ground and can remain active during the hottest part of the day. Second, think about honeybees. When a hive gets too hot in summer, worker bees will collect water and spread it over the hive's surface. Then, other bees fan their wings to increase evaporation, which cools the hive. This behavioral effort ensures the colony's survival. So, as you can see, these behaviors are crucial for managing temperature.
