Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating behavior in animals called 'cooperative hunting.' This is when animals work together to catch prey, which increases their chances of success compared to hunting alone. I'll give you two examples. First, consider the African lion. Lions live in prides, and females often hunt in groups. They use a strategy where some lions circle around to drive the prey, like zebras or wildebeests, toward other lions hiding in the grass. This coordinated effort allows them to capture larger, faster animals that a single lion couldn't catch on its own. Second, think about orcas, or killer whales. They hunt in pods and use sophisticated tactics. For instance, when hunting seals on ice floes, a group of orcas will swim together to create a wave that washes the seal off the ice into the water, where other pod members are waiting to capture it. This requires precise timing and communication. So, in both cases, cooperative hunting enables animals to capture prey that would be impossible for an individual to obtain.
