Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'tool use.' Now, tool use isn't just a human trait; many animals have developed clever ways to use objects in their environment to solve problems. The key point is that animals use tools to gain a survival advantage, often to access food that would otherwise be out of reach. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the sea otter. Sea otters love to eat clams, but clams have hard shells. So, the otter will float on its back, place a rock on its belly, and then smash the clam against the rock to crack it open. This is a clear case of using an object as a tool to obtain food. Second, think about the woodpecker finch, a bird found in the Galapagos Islands. It feeds on insect larvae that hide deep inside tree bark. The finch can't reach them with its beak, so it picks up a small cactus spine or twig, holds it in its beak, and uses it to probe into the crevices to poke out the larvae. So, in both cases, these animals are using natural objects to extend their reach and access a food source that would otherwise be inaccessible.
