Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating phenomenon in animal behavior called 'tool use.' Now, tool use isn't just about using objects to get food; it can also serve social purposes. My main point is that animals sometimes use tools to communicate or manipulate social interactions, not just for survival. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the chimpanzee. In some communities, male chimpanzees use leafy branches during aggressive displays. They drag these branches noisily to intimidate rivals, and this behavior is often learned and passed down within a group. Second, think about the California sea otter. While sea otters famously use rocks to crack open shellfish, they also use tools socially. A female otter may offer a rock to a pup, not as a practical tool, but as a way to bond and teach. This sharing strengthens the mother-pup relationship and helps the pup learn future foraging skills. So, as you can see, tool use in animals goes beyond mere necessity—it plays a role in social learning and communication.
