Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'temporal partitioning.' This occurs when different species that compete for the same resources reduce competition by using those resources at different times. The main point is that this allows them to coexist in the same habitat without one driving the other to extinction. Let me give you two examples from a tropical rainforest. First, consider two species of bats that both feed on the same type of fruit. One species, the fruit bat, is active at dusk, while the other, the nectar bat, is active later at night. By feeding at different times, they avoid direct competition for the fruit. Second, think about two species of lizards on the forest floor. One species hunts insects during the day, when it's warm and sunny, while the other species hunts at dusk, when the temperature drops. This temporal separation allows both to thrive, as they don't compete for the same prey at the same moment. So, temporal partitioning is a key mechanism for biodiversity.
