Today we're going to talk about how animals use deception to survive. One key strategy is called 'mimicry of warning signals.' Some harmless animals imitate the bright colors or patterns of dangerous species to avoid being eaten. For example, the scarlet king snake has red, yellow, and black bands, very similar to the venomous coral snake. Predators that have learned to avoid coral snakes also avoid the harmless king snake, giving it protection. Another example is the viceroy butterfly, which closely resembles the monarch butterfly. Monarchs are toxic because they feed on milkweed, and birds avoid them. The viceroy, though not toxic, benefits from looking like the monarch because birds mistake it for the toxic one and leave it alone. So, the main point is that by mimicking warning signals of dangerous species, harmless animals can trick predators into avoiding them, increasing their chances of survival.
