Today we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in animal behavior known as 'tool use'. While we often associate tool use with primates or birds, some invertebrates also exhibit this ability, and it serves important survival functions. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the veined octopus. This creature collects coconut shells discarded by humans on the ocean floor. It carries two half shells under its body and, when threatened by predators like large fish, it fits the shells together to form a protective dome, hiding inside until the danger passes. This not only provides shelter but also allows the octopus to move across open areas safely. Second, think about the dung beetle. This insect rolls balls of animal dung, which it then uses as a food source. But interestingly, the beetle also uses the dung ball for thermoregulation. On hot days, it climbs onto the ball to cool itself in the breeze, away from the scorching ground. This behavior helps it maintain its body temperature, thus enabling it to continue foraging efficiently. Both examples show how these creatures have adapted to their environments using available materials in creative ways.
