Today we're going to talk about a fascinating concept in biology called 'mimicry'—specifically, how certain animals have evolved to resemble other species for survival. Mimicry is not just about looking alike; it's a strategic adaptation that can protect an animal from predators or help it catch prey. Let me give you two examples to illustrate this. First, consider the harmless milk snake. It has evolved to closely resemble the venomous coral snake, with similar red, yellow, and black banding. Predators that have learned to avoid the coral snake will also avoid the milk snake, giving it protection without any actual venom. Another example is the orchid mantis. This insect looks exactly like a pink orchid flower. It sits motionless on flowers, and when a pollinator like a bee or butterfly approaches to feed, the mantis strikes and captures it. So, in both cases, mimicry provides a clear survival advantage—either by deterring predators or by deceiving prey.
