Today we're going to discuss a fascinating concept in animal behavior called 'behavioral flexibility.' This refers to an animal's ability to change its behavior in response to new or changing environmental conditions. It's crucial for survival because environments are rarely static. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the urban raccoon. Historically, raccoons foraged along riverbanks, but as cities expanded, some populations adapted. They now open trash bins, navigate traffic, and even learn to avoid certain human deterrents. This shift from a natural to an urban diet and routine shows remarkable flexibility. Second, consider the acorn woodpecker. In some regions, these birds traditionally store acorns in tree trunks. But in areas where trees are scarce, they've been observed using wooden fence posts and even sides of buildings. This adaptability in their food storage strategy demonstrates the same principle. So, behavioral flexibility allows animals to exploit new opportunities and cope with habitat changes.
