Today we're going to talk about how animals use camouflage, but specifically about a type called 'disruptive coloration.' The main point is that disruptive coloration works by breaking up an animal's outline, making it harder for predators to recognize it as a single object. Let me give you two examples. First, consider the zebra. Its black and white stripes create a pattern that confuses predators, especially when zebras are in a herd. The stripes merge together, making it difficult for a lion to single out one zebra's shape. Second, think of the killdeer, a small bird. Its breast has two black bands that cross its body. When it sits on its nest, these bands break the oval shape of the bird, so it blends with the pebbles and shadows on the ground. So, in both cases, the key is that the pattern disrupts the outline, not just matching the background color.
