📖 Texto de lectura

The concept of 'social loafing' refers to the tendency of individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individuals feel less accountable for the final outcome, believing that their personal contribution is less noticeable or essential. Social loafing can reduce group productivity and is more likely in large groups where individual performance is not easily evaluated. Researchers suggest that making individual contributions identifiable or increasing task meaningfulness can mitigate this effect.

Professor: So, to illustrate social loafing, let me tell you about a study conducted at a university. Researchers asked students to clap and cheer as loudly as possible. First, each student did this alone, and their noise level was measured. Then, the students were put into groups of six and asked to clap and cheer again. Interestingly, when in the group, each individual produced less noise than when they were alone. On average, the noise per person dropped by about 20 percent. Why? Because in the group, students felt less personally responsible—they thought, 'My effort won't really matter, others will make up for it.' But here's the key: when the researchers made each person's contribution visible—for example, by placing a microphone in front of each student and telling them their individual output would be recorded—the social loafing disappeared. The students clapped just as loudly as when alone. This shows that making individual effort noticeable can counteract the tendency to slack off in groups.
