Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. In the study, participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to melt the candle and stick it to the wall, or tack it directly—both failed. But the solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a small shelf, and place the candle inside. The participants who failed were stuck thinking of the box only as a container for thumbtacks. They suffered from functional fixedness. Those who succeeded realized the box could serve as a platform—an entirely different function. So, the example shows how breaking free from the usual use of an object can solve a problem ingeniously.
