Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of tacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn properly. Some participants received the tacks already spilled out of the box, while others received them inside the box. Those who saw the box as a container struggled. But those who saw the box as a potential shelf—by tacking it to the wall and placing the candle on top—solved the problem easily. The key was seeing the box not just as a container, but as a platform.
