In biology, the concept of 'behavioral thermoregulation' refers to the deliberate actions animals take to regulate their body temperature. Unlike physiological mechanisms such as sweating or shivering, behavioral thermoregulation involves conscious or instinctive choices that move the animal to a more favorable thermal environment. This can include seeking shade, basking in the sun, or changing posture to increase or decrease heat absorption. Such behaviors are crucial for maintaining optimal body temperature, which affects metabolism, activity levels, and survival.

Professor: So, let me give you an example from a study on desert lizards. These reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external heat. In the morning, when the ground is still cool, you'll see them flattening their bodies against warm rocks, maximizing contact to absorb heat quickly. As the sun gets higher and the temperature rises, they lift their bodies off the hot surface, using their legs to elevate themselves so air can flow underneath and cool them. When it gets really hot, they retreat into the shade of a bush or a crevice, and sometimes they even burrow into the sand. By doing all this, they keep their body temperature within a range that allows them to move and hunt efficiently. If they stayed in the open sun all day, they'd overheat and die.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral thermoregulation.
