📖 Reading Passage

In psychology, the concept of 'social loafing' refers to the tendency of individuals to exert less effort when working in a group compared to when they work alone. This phenomenon often occurs because individual contributions become less identifiable in a group setting, leading to reduced motivation. Researchers have found that social loafing can be mitigated by making each member's contribution visible or by increasing the perceived importance of the task. Understanding this concept is essential for improving team productivity and collaboration.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a study I conducted with my students. I asked each student to write a short essay on a topic, but I divided them into two groups. In the first group, each student wrote their essay independently and submitted it directly to me. In the second group, I told them they would write essays as a team, and they would submit a single combined essay with all their names on it. I measured the effort by counting the number of words and the quality of arguments. Interestingly, the students in the independent group wrote much longer, more detailed essays. Those in the 'team' group wrote shorter pieces, and some even repeated points from others. The reason was clear: when they thought their individual effort was hidden in a group product, they felt less accountable and reduced their effort. This perfectly illustrates social loafing.
❓ Question Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of social loafing.
