📖 เนื้อเรื่อง

Cognitive dissonance refers to the mental discomfort experienced when a person holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or attitudes. This discomfort often motivates individuals to reduce the inconsistency by changing their beliefs, adding new cognitions, or downplaying the importance of the conflicting information. The theory, proposed by Leon Festinger, suggests that people strive for internal consistency to maintain psychological stability. When dissonance occurs, it can lead to irrational or self-justifying behavior as a means of restoring harmony.

🎧 การบรรยาย

Professor: Let me give you a classic example. Imagine a student, Sarah, who believes she is an honest person. In a moment of pressure during an exam, she glances at a classmate's answer sheet and copies a few answers. After the exam, she feels uneasy—this is cognitive dissonance. Her belief ('I am honest') conflicts with her action ('I cheated'). To reduce this discomfort, Sarah might change her belief, telling herself, 'Everyone cheats sometimes, and it’s not really dishonest if it’s just once.' Or she might add a new cognition: 'I only did it because the test was unfair, so it’s justified.' By rationalizing her behavior, she convinces herself that she is still an honest person, thus easing the tension between her values and her actions.
❓ คำถาม Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance and how Sarah’s behavior illustrates it.
