In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in its traditional manner. When individuals are faced with a problem, they often fail to see alternative uses for familiar items because their minds are fixed on the object's typical function. This rigidity can hinder creative problem-solving. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a mental shift to perceive objects in novel ways, which is essential for innovation and adaptability in various situations.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a candle, a box of tacks, and a book of matches, and were asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many people struggled because they saw the tack box only as a container for tacks. However, the solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall, and place the candle inside. Those who succeeded had to overcome functional fixedness by recognizing the box could serve as a platform, not just as packaging. In another condition, when the tacks were presented separately from the box, participants solved the problem more easily because the box was not pre-associated with its usual function. This shows how mental blocks can prevent us from seeing unconventional uses.
❓ 문제 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness and how it affects problem-solving.
