The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from imagining alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. Functional fixedness often arises because people become accustomed to the standard function of an item and fail to see its potential beyond that role. Overcoming this bias requires deliberate effort to think more flexibly about object properties and possible applications.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic psychology study. Participants were given a candle, a box of thumbtacks, and a book of matches. They were asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it would burn properly without dripping wax on the floor. Most people tried to thumbtack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but both failed. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall, and place the candle inside. The box, however, was 'functionally fixed' as a container for thumbtacks, so participants couldn't see it as a platform. Once someone pointed out the box's alternative use, the solution became obvious. This illustrates how functional fixedness prevents us from using objects in novel ways.
