Social loafing refers to the tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individual contributions are less identifiable in a group setting, leading to reduced motivation and effort. Social loafing is more likely to occur in large groups and when tasks are simple or repetitive, as individuals may feel their efforts are not crucial to the overall outcome. Understanding social loafing is important for improving teamwork and productivity in organizational settings.

Professor: Now, let me give you a real-life example. In a university marketing class, the professor assigned a group project to create a promotional campaign for a local charity. The class was divided into teams of five, and each team had to produce a poster and a short video. One team, let's call them Team A, worked together in a room, but they didn't assign specific roles. As the project progressed, some members started to slack off. For instance, one student, Mark, spent most of the time on his phone, contributing only a few ideas during the initial brainstorming. Another member, Sarah, missed two meetings and only helped with the final editing. When the project was due, the team submitted a decent but not outstanding campaign. Interestingly, when the professor later asked each student to write an individual reflection on how to improve the campaign, Mark and Sarah both wrote very detailed and creative suggestions. This showed that when they worked alone, they put in more effort and produced better ideas than they had during the group work. The professor explained that this was a classic case of social loafing: because their individual contributions were not clearly identified in the group, they felt less accountable and reduced their effort.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of social loafing.
